Seminar - Chiral Organocatalyst [Research Seminar]

Title:
Design of truly efficient chiral organocatalysts for practical asymmetric synthesis - a case study.

Prof. Keiji Maruka
Kyoto University, Japan

Key points:

1. Phase transfer catalysis
2. Amino acids - widely usage in pharmaceutical industry.
3. Bifunctional organocatalyst - a new field. From Science Week: On the organic approach to asymmetric catalysis. Check the new paper: B. List and J. W. Yang, Science 313(2006)1584.
4. Homochiral (R-R, S-S) and heterochiral (R-S).
5. New polyamine based chiral phase transfer catalysts.
6. The topic is kind of far from my research. But the idea of the catalysts design is the same. Design ----> Selectivity and activity ----> simplify ----> industry

Some Updates [General]

Copyright Weiwei
Liangfang came to Boston for a job interview at MIT. It goes smoothly. We actually went together to pick up my new car. Ling, Ling's wife, Liangfang and I went to Gloucester today.

I have been diving in Gloucester for a long time but never took a walk in the town. I am reading The Perfect Storm recently. So it's very nice to go around the downtown and take a look at the statue.

p.s. Liangfang's interview goes very well and he got the offer. Hong Rui and Qian Lin had their baby yesterday. Everyone is great and seems very productive.

My New Ride [General]

I finally bought a new car - a Scion XA. I have been driving my old Ford Escort for almost 5 years. It's been in bad driving condition for a long time and I think it's the time to move forward.

I just feel very nervous to drive the new car. Having been so used to the old car, I am constantly worrying about the scratches or anything bad that can happen. But so far it's very cool!

A New Semester [General]

The campus becomes more lively because the new semester is coming. Well the school semester has nothing to do with a post-doc (actually has nothing to do with senior graduate student either). But I just noticed simply because I have to cross the yard everyday.

The freshmen are with their parents. You can see everyone has a joyful face. Well everyone's happy being at Harvard - seems like a bright future in front.

I realize it's been exactly 10 years since I went to college. I feel like it's just yesterday.
